Deadline extended for Bonita Springs voluntary home buyout program

The City of Bonita Springs is submitting a grant application to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (FDEO) for a Voluntary Buyout Program. The program is open to all property owners within a flood prone area.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (FDEO) notified the City on Friday, August 9, 2019 that they would be extending the original grant submittal deadline for the Voluntary Buyout Program from August 15 to October 1. The grant application extension allows the City to reach out to additional property owners that did not initially have time to apply to the program based on the condensed timeline.

The City is concentrating on an area bound on the north by Imperial River, the east by Interstate 75, the south by Bonita Beach Road and the west by Lime Street. The funds are tied to Hurricane Irma funding allocated from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

City staff held three public workshops, canvassed the neighborhood and held a public hearing to discuss the program specifics. The City currently has approximately 70 interested property owners willing to participate in the program. The grant application is due to FDEO on October 1st.

City staff, Elly Soto McKuen, Senior Project Manager at (239) 949-6246 or through email at Elly.McKuen@Cityofbonitasprings.org can address any questions, comments or inquiries.
