City of North Port seeking public feedback on water control structure

The City of North Port plans to apply for a grant from the Florida Department of Economic Recovery Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure  (CDBG-MIT) Program to reconstruct Water Control Structure 113 located at 5946 Battersea Avenue, on the Snover Waterway.

The structure was originally constructed in 1975 and contains four manual gates. The reconstruction will include two additional gates and all gates will be automated with manual capability. The structure is one of 28 gated structures controlling water flow in an intricate canal system which prevents flooding and allows retention of water in the canal for potable water supply.

The estimated cost to remove the existing structure and design, permit and construct the new structure is $4,158,000. The city has $209,000 available to contribute towards design and permitting. The City intends to request $3,949,000 from the CDBG-MIT program.
