Sanibel Sea School brings waves of learning to children
Key West troubadour Jimmy Buffett was so moved by the ocean — from the calmness of a gently lapping tide, to the power of deeply moving currents, to the possibilities that lie beyond an endless horizon — that he penned these ballad lyrics:
“Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call.
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall.
You’ve seen it all, you’ve seen it all…”
Closer to home in Southwest Florida, there are landlocked children attending federally determined Title I schools (schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families) who have never seen nor dipped their toes in the ocean, have never had the chance to marvel at its wonders, have never tasted its salt on their lips.
The Sanibel Sea School is determined to change all that with a new program called A Taste of Salt.
If underprivileged school children don’t have the means to visit the ocean, bring the ocean to them.
