$23 million approved to restore Sanibel beaches

LEE COUNTY – The State and FEMA secured $23 million for the Sanibel Hurricane Ian Beach Recovery and Resilience Project to restore the island’s beaches affected by Hurricane Ian.

According to the City of Sanibel, crews will be dumping 400,000 tons of sand and replenishing shorelines from the lighthouse south of Bowman’s Beach, starting November 15.

The sand dropping will address washouts that emerged during the storm surge, restoring the beach profile to its pre-hurricane condition.
