Dr. Lisa Beever, director, Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program, will be the featured speaker at Greater Pine Island Civic Association Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m.

CHNEP is a partnership working to protect the natural environment from Venice to Bonita Springs to Winter Haven. The CHNEP is a committee-driven organization to implement a 20-year plan, known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP), to protect estuaries and their watersheds. The CHNEP area of focus includes Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee, Lee, Manatee, Polk and Sarasota counties.

The Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve is included in the area of interest. The CHNEP was involved in the Association of National Estuary Programs in 2011.

If you have questions about the deteriorating health of local waters or declining fish catches, please come to the meeting for a slide presentation followed by questions from attendees.

Dr. Beever is interested in hearing your concerns about continuing degradation of our local waters.

CHNEP calendars are full of information about the program and have beautiful pictures of wildlife and sea-life. Handouts will be available.

All civic meetings are open to the public at no charge. The meeting will held at the Elks on Pine Island Road, west of Stringfellow. Join or renew membership for a $10/p.p. annual fee.
