Lee County gets $14M Irma recovery funds to strengthen key hurricane shelters
Lee County is spending more than $7 million to make sure the two largest hurricane shelters in the county can withstand high wind blasts during a future storm.
A $7.3 million federal grant awarded through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity will be used to upgrade the roofs at Hertz Arena in Estero and Alico Arena at Florida Gulf Coast University.
County commissioners Tuesday [Oct. 19th] approved spending $4.5 million to "harden" roofs, windows and doors at Hertz Arena and another $2.8 million for Alico Arena.
