Fort Myers begins work to stop chronic flooding on Fowler Street

FORT MYERS – This time of the year in Southwest Florida, people are used to daily afternoon rains, but most of the roads in Fort Myers are draining better than Fowler Street.

Residents and business owners in the area of Fowler Street between State Road 82 and Edison say the flooding there has gotten worse.

On Tuesday, crews working on behalf of the City of Fort Myers blocked off the intersection of Fowler and Market Street to work on fixing the chronic flooding problems.

“Between Willard and Edison, that is the worst part,” said Jean Kenol Theobal, who lives nearby. “When it’s raining, this happens. It gets flooded. Very deep, your car could stop, and when you try to start it again, it doesn’t start.”

Richard, who helps run the Papa Meats Grocery Store at Fowler and South Street says he’s seen the floodwaters cause car accidents.
