Chiquita Lock Closure Scheduled for April 1, 2025: A Key Step in the South Spreader Waterway Enhancement Project

The Chiquita Lock will close to boating access on April 1, 2025, for removal as part of the South Spreader Waterway Enhancement Project, aimed at enhancing water quality and flow throughout the region. The removal is expected to be completed by June 2025.

In accordance with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) permit, no dredging of the waterway is allowed from November 15 through March 31 to protect manatees and other aquatic life during the peak of their breeding season. As a result, construction work in the water will commence on April 1, when dredging activities can safely begin. Upland work has already commenced to prepare for this important phase. Boaters are encouraged to temporarily relocate their vessels to nearby marinas during the construction period. A list of marinas and additional information about the project can be found at capecoral.gov/chiquitalock.

Key Project Milestones:

  • October 21, 2024: Initial shutdown of navigable waterway access for FEMA inspection
  • October 25, 2024: Waterway access reopens, pending any unforeseen circumstances
  • April 1, 2025: Final shutdown for construction, lasting up to 81 days
  • June 2025: Anticipated reopening of waterway access

The enhancement project will involve seawall demolition, dredging, and soil excavation to improve the waterway infrastructure. The city will continue to provide updates on the project's progress on the designated webpage: capecoral.gov/chiquitalock.
